Oregon State's Win is a Win for the Northwest

It's not really well understood just how improbable Oregon State's back-to-back baseball national championships are. Northern colleges are at a supreme disadvantage in baseball recruiting because the baseball season starts in February. Do you want to be swinging an aluminum bat during one of the coldest months in Arizona, or during one of the coldest months in Minnesota. Right.

Oregon State, like most northern schools, isn't going to convince many guys from out-of-state to come north. They rely almost exclusively on Northwest talent--34 guys on the roster of about 40 are from Oregon, Washington, Alaska or B.C.

The Most Outstanding Player of the series was Jorge Reyes (at right), a freshman from Warden, Washington, a farming town about 30 miles east of the Gorge. Reyes' grandparents drove 1200 miles from Monterrey, Mexico to watch Reyes pitch and win game 1 of the championship series.

Oregon State's championships tell you that, though the basketballers get a lot of attention, the Northwest is turning out some pretty good prep baseball players too.

Here's a scenario: Let's say you're a 16-year-old hot baseball prospect in California. You'd like to develop your game in college for a year or two before you make the leap to professional ball. All of a sudden, the phone rings. It's Pat Casey. Are you going to turn that call down?

All I know is that it gives me hope that the Cougs might once again be good on the baseball field.
