Bill Walsh Dies, His Last Win Was Against the Dawgs

Bill Walsh died today, at 75, of leukemia.

Walsh's last win as a head coach was against the Huskies; his Stanford Cardinal beat the Dawgs 46-28 on November 5th, 1994 (here's the Times game story). It was the Cardinals 3rd and final win of the year, and, counting NFL and college, Walsh's 136th win as a head football coach.

That game showcased the offensive genius that Walsh displayed throughout his career, the 46 points the then 12th-ranked Dawgs gave up were the most they'd allowed since 1987.

"I don't want to say we were embarrassed," cornerback Russell Hairston said after the loss. "OK, I might as well say we were embarrassed."

Walsh resigned November 29th (his replacement was Tyrone Willingham).

All told, Walsh was 1-4 against the Huskies in his two stints (1977-78, 92-94) as Stanford coach.

As 49er coach from 1979-88, Walsh only faced the Seahawks three times, going 2-1.

More pertinent for Hawks fans is the fact that Walsh plucked Mike Holmgren from BYU in 1986 to be his quarterbacks coach, and taught him the West Coast offense. Holmgren was an assistant under Walsh for three season. Here's the full Bill Walsh coaching tree.

I can't remember the specifics but Walsh criticized Don James right after he stepped down at the Huskies coach. The first game of that season was against Stanford's and there was a big to-do about the comments. Walsh wore Groucho Marx getting off the plane at Sea-Tac.
