Ichiro's been in a slump lately, and while we were watching the game the other day a dramatic friend of mine screamed out in agony "We can't win when Ichiro doesn't hit!"
Well, can we? I created a chart:
This seems like a time where you could use the same stats to argue both points. The M's are over .500 when Ichiro doesn't get any hits, so clearly they can win without his bat.
On the other hand, there's a very steady correlation between more hits by Ichi and a better winning percentage by the team. So you could probably use these stats to argue how important he is.
Your call, people.
Here's the raw numbers, accurate as of this morning:
When Ichiro gets no hits: 10-9
When Ichiro gets one hit or more: 44-36
When Ichiro gets two hits or more: 28-20
When Ichiro gets three hits or more: 6-4
When Ichiro gets four hits or more: 2-1
When Ichiro gets five hits or more: 1-0
(In case you care, here's the winning percentage for an exact number of hits)
16-16 (.500) when Ichiro gets one hit
22-16 (.579) when Ichiro gets two hits
4-3 (.571) when Ichiro gets three hits
1-1 (.500) when Ichiro gets four hits
1-0 (1.000) when Ichiro gets five hits

Interesting... but one wonders if the charts would be more dramatic for other players in the line up.. like Sexson.
