It's a Problem of Motivation, Bob

Ichiro
Before signing contract extension: .355
After signing contract extension: .267

Jose Vidro
Before rumors that Adam Jones might replace him: .286
After rumors that Adam Jones might replace him: .462

Just sayin'.

Ichiro PA since extension: 49
Vidro PA since Adam Jones rumors: 44

Small sample size caveats apply. Keep in mind Ichiro bruised his knee on July 15th, only two days after signing his extension. Additionally, Ichiro was playing significantly better than his career numbers in the first half of the season. He was due for a little regression to the mean. I don’t think there’s cause for concern. He couldn’t have picked a worse time to be slumping, but it’s probably unreasonable to expect him to perform at his first half level all season long. Vidro’s performance is a bit more worrying given that it might keep Jones in Tacoma.
