Let's all raise an imaginary glass to Horacio Ramirez, who last night recorded the cheapest win in Seattle Mariner history!
Ramirez allowed 7 earned runs last night and yet still won--only three other Mariner pitchers had done that.
But all three of those pitchers managed to at least go more than five innings. Not HoRam. He allowed his seven runs (on five hits and five walks) in just five innings.
Glenn Abbott (1979), Floyd Bannister (1982) and Felix Hernandez (2006) are the other Mariner pitchers to have allowed as many as seven earned runs and still lost. Here's a look at their starts.
Ramirez now has this improbable statline for 2007: 7-3, 7.12 ERA. That's a .700 winning percentage, folks, despite allowing roughly 2 runs every 3 innings.
This is also historic stuff. No starting pitcher has ever won 70% of his games with an ERA above six--only five pitchers have done it with an ERA above 5.
The current "record" holder is Jeff Suppan, who went 7-3 for the 1997 Red Sox with an ERA of 5.69. Ed Wells of the 1930 Yankees went 12-3 with a 5.20 ERA.
If anyone knows what HoRam is sacrificing before each start--lambs? goats? virgins?--please let us know.
