That's Syracuse's Jameel McClain. He's a speed-rushing defensive end who attacks from the blind side. He led the Big East in sacks last year, and ESPN grades him as the 14th best defensive end in college football.
This man could kill our savior.
The Dawgs' left tackle will protect His Holiness Jake Locker from McClain. Left tackle is a platoon: Cody Habben, a redshirt freshman (so never played in a college game), and sophomore Ben Ossai, who was the starter last year but got demoted at the start of fall practice for being overweight.
Yikes. I gotta be honest, I'm fearing McClain's gonna pull a 1990 Derrick Thomas on the Dawgs.
McClain is 6-1, 256, and runs a 4.8 40. According to ESPN (insider), his attributes are speed, awareness, and a deadly rip move (that's when you deliver an uppercut to the armpit of a blocker, getting him off balance and blowing past him).
And when he gets to the QB, he "has a mean streak and flashes the ability to deliver the big hit."
Keeping McClain from delivering blind-side hits on to Locker will be key--not just for winning on Friday, but for keeping Locker, you know, alive.
McClain's weaknesses--according to ESPN--are that he tends to overpursue, so the Huskies might look to attack him with counter plays, screens and misdirectional bootlegs. Or they might just run away from him.
