The vets lose one, the kids win one (assist to Putz) for the M's. M's lose 12-4, then win 3-2 on a game-tying homer in the ninth by Jeff Clement (his first career) and a walkoff single by Mike Morse (who's now 6-8 on the year). Rookie Rob Johnson, who got his first ML hit in Game one, scored the winning run from third after doing a great job of tagging from second to third on a Beltre lineout.
In the ninth inning of the second game, with them M's down one run and nobody on, John McLaren pinch-hit Jeremy Reed for Adam Jones. Jones had a .382 OBP and 29 homers with Tacoma. Reed had a .358 OPB and 13 homers. Now, admittedly, Reed was a lefty facing a righty, but still. That's like pinch hitting Ben Broussard for Adrian Beltre. Makes no sense, at all. McLaren, WTF? Seriously!
Other great moments in coaching: US Women's World Cup coach Greg Ryan benched UW alum goalie Hope Solo, who hadn't allowed a goal the whole tournament was riding a 300-minute scoreless streak in this morning's semifinal against Brazil, in favor of veteran Briana Scurry (who, presumably, has "been through the wars"). The US lost 4-0. Nice work, coach!
The P-I with a good review of what's wrong with Husky Stadium.
The UW is well behind the renovation arms race in the Pac-10. (But still, Husky Stadium is the best...location, location, location, people).
Some UW committee looked at a bunch of remodels elsewhere and they liked Wisconsin's the best.
Art Thiel suggests that Husky Stadium should be torn down and they should use the land for a hospital. I'm going to be breathing into a paper bag for the rest of the day.
Why did Taylor Mays of O'Dea, the son of a UW football player, skip town and go to USC? Because he preferred Pete Carroll's "loud and wild" personality to Tyrone Willingham's, well, um, reserved style. Does this mean all Husky players are going to be dull?

Small correction on the Soccer piece, Hope let in two in the first game against North Korea. After that, she was perfect, 300 minutes of shutout soccer. The coach made a HUGE blunder and, while I'm not gonna say they would have won, it wouldn't have been as ugly as it turned out.
