12 years ago today, the Rockies played their first post-season game. This game was notable not only because former Mariner Mike Kingery got a hit, but because of one of the most colossal managing mistakes in postseason history.
Don Baylor ran out of pinch hitters--in a nine-inning game!--so that when the Rockies loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the ninth inning, they had to send pitcher Lance Painter to the plate.
Painter, who was one for nine on the year, struck out against Mark Wohlers. The Rockies lost in four games.
Incidentally, it was also 12 years ago today that the Mariners played their first postseason game, and the day that O.J. Simpson was found not guilty.
The Rockies play the Phillies today at noon PST.
