The Hawks held the Niners to single-digit first downs last week, and when I was looking through all the times that had happened before, it struck me that, in most of them, the offense went hog-wild.
Makes sense, if your defense is stopping the other team, you have the ball more often, get better field position, etc.
But the Hawks offense only managed 23 points against the Niners. The defense won that game.
So that's what got me started thinking about the premise for this column, which is that, for the first time in the Holmgren Era, the defense is better than the offense.
The P-I calls it: Hawks 'D' comes before 'O'.
It's on the inside front page of the sports section if you have the paper.

This is a stat I'd love to see:
Number of times Shaun Alexander is helped up to his feet by his teammates per game.
If someone with a lot more time and TVs than me could look into this, I would be so appreciative. Compared with other running backs, I think you'd find the number quite low.
In the spirit of full disclosure: I think Shaun Alexander is a tool.
His "stabbed in the back" comment a few seasons back and the "power of prayer" for his micro-fracture last season was just a bunch of sanctimonious, "if you knew how hard I worked in the off-season" crap.
Extra credit for noting how many seconds Shaun lays on the ground WAITING for his teammates to help him. Watch for this next week:
