Kevin Durant sprained his ankle in the Sonics fifth loss in six exhibitions last night. X-rays showed no fracture, but Durant's probably out until the season opener on Halloween.

Brandon Johnson has beaten out J.R. Hasty, who holds Washington's high-school single-season rushing TD record, for the backup TB job--and, presumably, has an inside track on the starting TB job once senior Louis Rankin graduates.

An M's inside source tells the P-I's John Hickey about Jose Guillen: "At this point, at least, I don't see him coming back."

Former Mariner pitching coach Bobby Cuellar is the new manager of the AA New Britain Rock Cats.

Former Mets and Red Sox pitching coach Dave Wallace is the M's new minor league pitching coordinator. He replaces Pat Rice, a former M's farmhand who'd had the job eight seasons.

The MLS announced that San Jose will get an expansion team, but still no news about Seattle. An MLS spokesman says an official announcement may not come until early 2008.
