Keeping up with the other Pac-10 teams, and Gonzaga. (All rankings are at the time of the game).
Of note this week: Arizona and Stanford were both upset, and Oregon State lost to a D-II school.
Friday
#9 Wazzu 74, Idaho 43 [box]: No Cougar scored more than 12, but six guys were in double figures. Of interest--the Cougs are only going seven-deep right now. Seems like the Huskies or another team that plays pressure-style defense could stand a chance of wearing them out.
Saturday
Siena 79, #20 Stanford 67 [box]: Why would Stanford ever agree to leave Palo Alto in November and travel to Albany? The Cardinal players probably lost out of spite. Certainly seems like they weren't playing aggressively--they got to the line for only three foul shots all game. Siena shot 32. O'Dea's Mitch Johnson continued to be unimpressive at the point, he had only 3 assists in 29 minutes, and 8 points.
USC (California) 85, USC (South Carolina) 75 [box]: The AP reported that no less than 16 NBA scouts were at the game to see O.J. Mayo. So the Trojans' Daniel Hackett picked a nice night to have a triple-double--20 pts, 10 boards, 10 assists. Mayo led all scorers with 29 points, on 11-20 shooting.
Alaska-Fairbanks 62, Oregon State 60 [box]: Alaska-Fairbanks will have a nice smack-talk ace in the hole when playing St. Martin's, Northwest Nazarene and other competitors in the Division II Great Northwest Conference. OSU's Marcel Jones missed a three at the buzzer and the Nanooks had the win. They are coached, incidentally, by former Sonic forward/enforcer Clemon Johnson. Ugly loss for OSU, but they'll become a different team when former Rainier Beach star and Kansas signee C.J. Giles gets eligible Dec. 8.
#13 Oregon 85, Portland 61 [box]: After four games, the Tajuan Porter at point guard experiment is over. Porter had just one assist in 33 minutes in Oregon's win, looks like Kamryn Brown handled the ball for the most part--he had 10 assists. Luke (son of Jack) Sikma, a freshman, played 30 minutes for Portland, he had 3 points, 10 boards, 3 steals, and 2 blocks.
Virginia 75, #17 Arizona 72 [box]: We may look back at 2006-07 as the last gasp of the Lute Olson era. Did you know the 'Cats have lost five of their last seven at McKale Center? That includes this loss to UVA, which technically comes under assistant coach Kevin O'Neill, filling in while Olson deals with an undisclosed personal matter. Then again, UA does have the nation's 7th-ranked recruiting class this year, according to Rivals.com.
#14 Gonzaga 84, UC-Riverside 48 [box]: 6-10 freshman Austin Daye continued his hot start, leading the Bulldogs with 16 points. Gonzaga shot 53%.
Sunday
Oregon State 65, USC-Upstate 46 [box]: The Beavers did at least get one win this weekend, against the Spartans of the Division II (snigger) Peach Belt Conference (full-on guffaw). This win gave them a pathetic seventh place finish in the Top of the World Classic--the PAC-10 Beavers finished behind host Alaska-Fairbanks, Akron, Colorado State, IUPUI, Portland State, and Tennessee State. This is not helping our RPI, you assholes.
