Hawes Debuts, Seattle Yawns

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems no one gives a shit about Spencer Hawes.

It's weird. Hawes is practically a Seattle basketball legacy, his father and uncle both played at Washington. Hawes won a state championship with Seattle Prep, and played a year with the Huskies.

Yet his NBA debut wasn't really anticipated by anyone, and, when it happened, passed without much comment.

I wonder why Hawes seems to inspire so little enthusiasm. Is it because he left UW after one year? Is it because he went to a private school? Is it because he doesn't fit the typical "learned the game on the playground" story we've grown used to?

Hawes debuted with a six-minute appearance in the Kings' Nov. 10th game vs. Minnesota, his first points came on a layin.

In the Kings' four games since, his minutes have increased to around 13 a night [game log]. In his last game, a 105-95 win over Detroit, Hawes had 6 points in 13 minutes, going 1-1 from field and 4-4 from the line.

Is Hawes setting the world on fire? No. But compare #10 pick Hawes to the Sonics #12 pick from three years ago...In 21 fewer minutes, Hawes has more than triple the points of Robert Swift.

I'll tell you why no one cares about Hawes...because we want to forget the most disappointing Husky B-ball Season in 5 years. I follow Nate Robinson, I follow Brandon Roy...but I'll maybe glance at the box score when it comes to Hawes...it helps me pretend last year never happened and we're skipping straight from the Sweet 16 appearance to this season.
