USC Upset, Everyone Else Rolls: College Hoops Over the Weekend

Keeping up with the other Pac-10 teams, and Gonzaga. (All rankings are at the time of the game).

Friday
#10 Wazzu 68, EWU 41 [box]: This is what championship teams do--very efficiently crush inferior competition. Watch out for Wazzu.

#21 Stanford 111, Harvard 56 [box]: Most points for the Cardinal since 1990. Remember Tommy Amaker? He coaches Harvard now. Yipes.

#2 UCLA 69, Portland St. 48 [box]: The AP on true frosh Kevin Love's performance: "The 6-foot-10, 270-pounder scored on consecutive dunks that had him flying off the rim...then he whipped an outlet pass the length of the court...Love showed his versatility by hitting a 3-pointer...Love swatted away a shot in the second half, sending the ball out to midcourt." Have fun with that, Jon Brockman.

Saturday
Mercer 96, #18 USC 81 [box]: I knew USC would rely on O.J. Mayo, but 27 shots? Said Mercer's Calvin Henry: "They ran every play and screen for him." Mayo's 32 points weren't enough to knock off the (any guesses?) Bears of Mercer. Mercer's from the Atlantic Sun conference, and so is Gardner-Webb, the school that knocked off Kentucky last week. Don't think that will be a mitigating factor for AP voters, who will wise up and dump SC from the top 25.

#13 Oregon 100, Pepperdine 70 [box]: Tajuan Porter had nine assists in his first game as a point guard, but five turnovers. He's miscast at the point and this could be a season-long issue.

#21 Stanford 97, Northwestern State 58 [box]: Another offensive outburst from the typically low-scoring Cardinal. Five players were in double figures.

Sunday
#21 Stanford 67, UC-Santa Barbara 48 [box]: O'Dea grad Mitch Johnson has struggled his first two years as Stanford's point, and the non-conference slate is probably his last chance to keep the job. In the first three games, he's looking good, with an assist/turnover ratio of 13/2.

#13 Oregon 80, Pacific 64 [box]: Three assists and two turnovers for Porter, but he scored 28 points. The guy's a scorer: "Today, I felt like I needed to take on the scoring load," he said after the game...I'll bet he did. He'll be running the point more like an Allen Iverson than like a Jason Kidd.

#14 Gonzaga 77, Montana 54 [box]: Star recruit Austin Daye had 20 points and 10 boards. Bad news for the Zags--Josh Heytvelt needs foot surgery and will be out 4-6 weeks.

This week's games
Monday: Western Michigan @ #13 Oregon; Youngstown State @ #2 UCLA.
Tuesday: N. Arizona @ #17 Arizona; #9 Wazzu @ Boise St.; Idaho @ #14 Gonzaga; N.J.I.T @ Washington.
Wednesday: Southern Miss. @ Cal, Utah or High Point @ Washington.
Thursday: USC @ Citadel, #20 Stanford @ Northwestern, Colo. St. @ Oregon St.
