A friend emailed me earlier today that, in the wake of the Turner firing, he's withholding any contributions to Husky athletics for now, because he's worried the U-Dub's going to hire some, as he put it, "SEC-style" athletic director with a win at all costs mentality.
Looks like my friend isn't the only one worried.
In a final letter to his staff, Todd Turner says of college sports, "it's a frightening time." Bob Condotta of the Seattle Times obtained the letter, which he reprints in full on his blog. Turner turns nasty when he starts talking about--presumably--the Husky boosters who wanted Tyrone Willingham fired.
In recent days, I've seen a side of athletics that sickens me with the incessant interloping of uninformed, unenlightened, self-anointed experts who look upon intercollegiate athletics solely as entertainment to satisfy their own self interests.Turner concludes by hoping that Washington can be the place where this trend is challenged--though it won't be on his watch.

Um... wow...
I gotta think there’s a balance here. I don’t think anyone want UW to be Northwestern or Duke, and I don’t think anyone want us to be Florida State or Oklahoma.
(but maybe I'm wrong, do that anti-Turner/Willingham folks want a "win at all costs" AD and head coach? Are the pro-Turner/Willingham folks accepting of the ramifications of a "clean as a whistle" program?)
I don't know, maybe I’m being naive to believe that college football isn't already Minor League Football. Maybe you do need to be somewhat of a diploma mill to establish a perennially competitive program.
I guess my point is just to recognize the full weight of decision we make here with the selection of the new AD.
