Here We Go Again: Niehaus a Finalist for Hall of Fame

Seattlest.com, the news blog for which I'm co-editor, doesn't have much in the way of tradition.

One annual rite, though, is my angry, plaintive post every time Dave Niehaus gets passed over for the Baseball Hall of Fame.

There was 2005, when the Hall of Fame rewarded awful former Padres broadcaster Jerry Coleman. I wrote:

Coleman has long been regarded as one of baseball's worst announcers, prone to such verbal infelicities as:

"Rich Folkers is throwing up in the bullpen."

"Enos Cabell started out here with the Astros and before that he was with the Orioles."

Putting Jerry Coleman in the Hall of Fame for broadcasting is like putting Gary Coleman in the Hall of Fame for tallness.

Then, 2006, when the award went to Gene Elston, I wrote about discovering that the award criteria doesn't include whether a broadcaster is any good or not.

In 2007, well, evidently I was too upset.

Niehaus has been nominated for five years in a row, and he's one of ten nominees this year--including Joe Morgan, who made it in through fan voting.

Could this finally be Niehaus' year? One of our few hopes in life is that Niehaus gets to enjoy the induction he richly deserves, while he's still alive.
