So Mark Rypien, former all-conference quarterback for Washington State and Super Bowl MVP, called Wazzu coach Tony Bennett and asked for tickets to tonight's Wazzu/Gonzaga game. Bennett's response? He tells The Tacoma News Tribune, "When you tell the Super Bowl MVP no, that’s how hard it is," Bennett said. "I said, 'Sorry, my man, I did try.'"
What a load of crap. I'll bet this never happens to Doug Flutie.
Apparently Rypien will be at home in front of his radio tonight when #17 Gonzaga hosts #8 Wazzu in what may be the best in-state collegiate basketball game ever. Why not his TV? I'll get to that. First, the history.
Washington State and Washington have never played a game in which both teams were ranked. (The Huskies have only played a ranked Cougars team four times--twice last year, and twice in 1950).
Washington State has never played another ranked in-state team while they, too, were ranked (mainly because Wazzu has gone full generations without being ranked). So it's sort of a big deal.
The game is at 8pm on...wait for it...ESPN U! Hoorah! Which isn't available on Comcast in either Spokane or Seattle. ESPN, Comcast, you greedy bastards.
Head to a bar with DISH or DirecTV if you want to see this one.
You can buy that Mark Rypien figure for $14.95 on eBay.
