Seattle Sports: In the Morning

Holmgren's end-of-year press conference contained no resolution about whether he'll be back next year, he said basically the same thing he said during the season--that he'll get together with his wife, talk it over, etc, etc. Holmgren did say that he might decide he wants an extension.

Deion Branch tore his ACL against Green Bay. He'll be back by October at the earliest. Biggest trade bust in Hawks history?

Holmgren on Marcus Trufant: "Marcus is going to be a Seahawk. He should be a Seahawk. I've had this conversation with him. This is where he should be for his entire career, and we want him to be here. I think he wants to be here, and it's going to be one of those contracts that I think will be talked about a fair amount. We do have the franchise tag available if necessary.

Other news: Walter Jones will have surgery on his bum shoulders, and Shaun Alexander will finally have surgery to repair that cracked wrist.

Art Thiel says the Hawks should cut Alexander.

The Mariners signed George Sherrill, who was eligible for arbitration, to a major league contract, and Arthur Rhodes, who is eligible for social security, to a minor league contract. Geoff Baker thinks the Rhodes signing could be insurance in case they trade Sherrill.

After spending 45 minutes serving food to people at a New Orleans substance abuse center, P.J. Carlesimo wanted to do more, so he took the players to a tent city underneath a freeway, reports the P-I's Gary Washburn, where the residents included a woman with a broken left arm who held all the food in her right. Said one homeless man: "Man, this is great. The Hornets don't even come over here. Seattle is going to be my favorite team now. Nobody comes over here to help us. And this was one of those days where people were hungry, so we needed this."

Kevin Pelton of Supersonics.com reports live from the D-League showcase in Boise, where all 14 D-League teams are playing at funky Qwest Arena: "Qwest Arena is a neat venue, and a unique one at that. There is no concourse per se; the walkway is inside the arena, so fans never are away from being able to see the action. There's just one row of courtside sites on each side of the arena, and the rest of the space is taken up by tables surrounded by chairs where groups of fans can get together to chat and take in the game. The most unconventional feature is that the arena is built into the neighboring Grove Hotel. Some of the rooms open up into the arena, a la the Skydome in Toronto. How closely connected are the hotel and the arena? Well, I was able to make it from my seat on press row to my room and back in less than two minutes of game action."

Cal's DeSean Jackson will go to the NFL.

Cortez Kennedy didn't make the finalists list for the Hall of Fame again.

In high school boys action last night, Franklin snuck past a Bothell team that's looking like a state title contender, a bunch of games got snowed out, and there were a ton of blowouts, including Rainier Beach topping the century mark against Lakeside.

Good news about Trufant. I hope they end up using the franchise tag on him instead of giving him a long term contract and letting the designation go to waste. Chances are any Trufant contract is going to give him top-5 money anyway. Why not force him into a one year deal with less guaranteed money and that has fewer ramifications toward the cap in the future?
