Gonzaga beat U of Portland 79-41. The Pilots are a pretty poor offensive team, and the Zags made them worse by shutting down their leading scorer, Nic Raivio (brother of Derek). Raivio had just six points as the Zags hassled him with taller guards. According to Dave Trimmer of The Oregonian, the crowd chanted "Derek's better" at Nic. Austin Daye had a ridiculously productive game for the Zags, scoring 19 points and grabbing 13 boards in just 15 minutes.
Zags are 16-5 overall, 5-0 in conference, next game is Saturday at Santa Clara.
Pilots are 7-14 overall, 1-4 in conference, next game is Saturday at #20 St. Mary's.
After a 10 am hearing in U.S. District Court, we might know whether the Sonics will play here in 2008-09. A judge will decide when to hear the Sonics suit to break their lease with the city. If the judge sets the date the city wants, Oct. 27, the Sonics would likely have no choice but to postpone plans to move to OKC, writes Eric D. Williams.
The awful stories about the 2000 Huskies continue to pour in--this time about the repeated domestic abuse allegations against Curtis Williams that were ignored by the local media. Not quite as stomach turning as the Jerramy Stevens story, but close.
The latest on the Jones/Bedard "trade" from the Times' Larry Stone.
Mickael Gelabale, who's played only five times this month, is headed to the D-League.
Wally Szczerbiak tells the P-I's Gary Washburn: "In our wins, we seem to have miraculous efforts by Kevin and that seems to be the recipe for winning. And we've got to figure out a way to win ballgames in different ways when his shot is not falling."
The UW women's program is headed in the right direction, writes the Herald's John Sleeper: "[Head coach Tia] Jackson's fabulous. The woman can coach. She's smart. She can motivate. Her players obviously trust her. In five years, maybe fewer, Washington will have to fight off a lot of schools that want her services. Jackson has Rising Star written all over her."
The Mariners want to sign Brad Wilkerson to play rightfield, reports John Hickey, assuming that they trade Adam Jones. Wilkerson hasn't had a decent year at the plate since 2004, when he hit 32 home runs. He did play centerfield as recently as '05, so he should be half-decent on defense.
The WNBA signed a new collective bargaining agreement with players. The P-I's Darren Fessenden examines what the new agreement means for the Storm.
Larry Smith, the former Arizona and USC football coach, died at 68.
