Unsubstantiated Rumor Watch: Will the Sonics be Saved Tomorrow?

Seattle city leaders will soon announce a plan to keep the Sonics in town, according to SupersonicSoul's Paul Merrill:

Several sources close to the situation (who, for some reason, felt they could confide in Supersonicsoul, aka Queen Blabbermouth) have claimed that the city may be soon unleashing a new plan to save our Sonics...According to my Deep Throats, the announcement could come as early as tomorrow.
Merrill provides no additional details about the alleged plan. Recent speculation has centered around the hope that Steve Ballmer or some other well-heeled fan would buy the Sonics to keep them in town, like the four women who bought the Storm did.

Any plan they come up with will be wholly dependent on the whims of Clay Bennett and his ownership group. They own the team, and the recent history of the NBA has shown that whatever an owner wants to do, they generally can. (Thanks, Howard Schultz!).

According to Bennett's demands, any plan to keep the team here would need to include money for a NEW arena--not a refurbished Key. We'll see.

I'm concerned with how Paul reported this story. Only that a deal could be announced soon isn't enough to post. Details like who, what, where, why, when, how and how much are very important. Getting any sort of comment from the current Sonics ownership group and David Stern would give his article some balance. I hope that no media outlet picks this up unless it later turns out to be true.
