Locker's Injurer Locked Up

Oregon State safety Al Afalava, whose helmet-to-helmet hit on Jake Locker was probably the most terrifying moment of 2007, drove his car into a Corvallis bus shelter while intoxicated, police say.

Afalava left the scene of the accident, but forgot to bring his car along, which cops somehow managed to trace back to him.

Afalava's been cited for criminal mischief--which sounds cute but is actually a felony--hit and run, and DUII.

He was never punished for his hit on Locker, but he did receive a 15-yard penalty for spearing in the Oregon/Oregon St. game.

Fact: Al Afalava is dangerous to football players and to municipal transportation systems.

Cliff Kirkpatrick of the Corvallis Gazette Times reports that, according to the school's code of conduct, he'll be suspended for at least one game. But that's just for being caught drinking underage.

Writes Kirkpatrick:
After a string of alcohol-related problems involving the team leading up to the 2005 season, ending with the alcohol poisoning death of an 18-year-old friend of team members, Riley started a zero tolerance policy for his players when it comes to alcohol and drugs.
So, depending on your interpretation of "zero tolerance", the Beavers could be losing Afalava, who was honorable-mention All-Pac-10 last year and the team's third leading tackler. He'd be a senior in '08.

HT: Every Day Should Be Saturday, which awards Oregon St. 8 points in their Fulmer Cup standings for football player malfeasance.

I think my favorite part of the story was this, in the third paragraph:

"It is expected that Afalava will be suspended, putting his participation in spring practice in question."

Uh, really? This is a concern at this point? If one my team's players plowed his car in to a bus stop and was being charged with what this guy is being charged with, I'm pretty sure spring football practices are the thing I'm least worried about.

But, given how some college fans look at the importance of athletics (cough, UWBOOSTERSANDE-MAILS, cough), well, nothing really surprises me.

Didn't cover it up like the ducks did... and will have at least a 1 game suspension, unlike what the Huskies have done in the past. Seems like the Beavers are at least taking care of it. Not condoning the act, but lets see what comes of it before we start calling OSU a crooked program.

As for Afalavas hit on Jake, get over it, there was no penalty, how are they going to "punish him" down the road for it. The "spear" in the Civil War, watch the tape, the announcers are even baffled by it. Now that one, was clearly a clean hit with his shoulder.
