Percy Allen of the Times reports that Clay Bennett is willing to give up the Sonics name, the team's records, the banners, pretty much anything associated with the team (other than the "players"--yes, that means Donyell Marshall--and the coaches) in an effort to break his lease with the city.
True fact--unless Clay Bennett can provide a replacement team, that deal is simply not going to fly.
I went to the Save Our Sonics...event? People are calling it a protest, but it really wasn't--they cheered on the team, bought tickets, bought concessions, the only thing they did was chant "Save Our Sonics" at intervals.
Jeff Green told the P-I's Gary Washburn about the crowd: "It's a blessing that they're still behind us. They are still here and we're having a rough season. They are just showing their love for the Sonics. We know they have our back right now and they don't want us to leave and if we continue to do what we're doing, you never know what might happen."

Clay Bennett Wants Out And Bad, Sonics Fans Chant Otherwise

Its not the best, but keeping the name, colors, and history is at least something. If we ever do get a new team, and you would have to think that with Seattle's population base and being a gateway to Asia (you know, the reasons that Stern and Bennett aren't listening to now) that the NBA will return to Seattle. It would just be weird to have them called anything but the Sonics.
The fun thing to think about is, if a new franchise comes along, and Stern is still running the league, what sort of reception does he get from the locals?
I like that Jeff Green said something. I want to hear more players speak up. Unfortunately, they can't say anything too controversial.
As for the "event." I really hope something actually is newsworthy for that final home game.
It wasn't intended to be a protest. It was a chance for 100 die-hard fans to congregate before the game, drink some beer, cheer like hell for the team and enjoy what was potentially one of the last Sonics games at Key Arena.
I read your article in the P-I. I have many gripes with it, but the greatest of them is that you analogized your shooting touch to Petro's. You clearly don't watch many Sonics games, as Petro actually has a beautiful stroke for a big man. One of the few things he does well is stroke the elbow jumper.
thank you
