That's the big news of the day, that based on his record-setting spring performance, Mike Morse will start the season in a rightfield platoon with Brad Wilkerson.
If you're like me, and can never remember who's a lefty and who's a righty, it's Morse who's the righty and will bat against LHPs, Wilkerson the lefty who'll bat against RHPs.
Morse, for his career, hits .333/.467 against lefties (only 120 ABs).
The weird thing about this is that Wilkerson is one of those odd lefties who hits better against lefties than righties.
For his career, Wilkerson's hit .245/.449 vs. righties, and .265/.456 vs. lefties. So that's weird.
The other news is that the M's decided to go with an 11-man staff, meaning that they can keep one more bench player. That player will be Charlton Jimerson, chosen for his speed and defensive ability--with Morse, Wilkerson and Ibanez as regulars in the OF, McLaren will want some defensive replacement options.
The M's still had to pick between Cha Baek and R.A. Dickey for long man, and they went with Baek. Dickey was a Rule V guy, so they had to offer him back to Minnesota, but they made a deal with the Twins, sending them 21-year-old catcher Jair Fernandez, who hit .260 in the Midwest League last year, for the right to keep Dickey. Dickey also had to go through waivers but, somewhat surprisingly given the state of major league pitching, no one picked him up.
