Northwest Sports: Over the Weekend

A bunch of local teams in the tourney--my thoughts on their opponents.

Angels ace John Lackey has a triceps injury and is out until May. Kelvim Escobar is already out, perhaps until June. Angels rotation as it stands: Ervin Santana, Jered Weaver, Jon Garland, Joe Saunders, and one of Nick Adenhart (never pitched above AA), Nick Green, or Dustin Moseley. Boy Howdy!

Ken Griffey, Jr., says he'll want a Mariners cap on his Cooperstown plaque.

The Huskies host Valpo in the CBI, 6pm on Wednesday.

Former Husky QB Johnny Durocher is in camp with the Mariners as a pitcher.

Anthony Russo performed well in the Huskies' Pro Day combine for NFL scouts Friday.

Sue Bird re-signed with the Storm.

Edgar Martinez denied reports of drug use among the late 90s' Mariners.

Oklahoma's legislature said they will provide the tax breaks that Washington's wouldn't.

The Seattle Thunderbirds clinched home-ice advantage for the first-round of the WHL playoffs.

Mark Brunell signed a two-year contract with New Orleans.

Lindsey Vonn clinched the women's World Cup skiing title. Bode Miller had won the men's, so the US has its first sweep of the titles since 1983.

The Sonics recalled Sene from the D-League.

The 49ers cut Darrell Jackson. Would the Hawks bring him back?

In the NCAA DII women's regionals at Royal Brougham Pavilion, SPU won two games to advance to a matchup with Alaska-Anchorage for a spot in the tourney's Elite Eight. SPU's men lost to Alaska-Anchorage in Saturday's second round.

Spring football started this weekend for Wazzu--new coach Paul Wulff tells the Times' Craig Smith it will be critical: "The bottom line is, we need to get everything in. We need to teach scheme and teach technique."

This is kind of funny--War Pass, hyped as a Kentucky Derby contender, came into Saturday's Tampa Bay Derby as a 1-20 favorite--and finished last.

Portland's Grant High won the state 6A championship. Jefferson High, also of PDX, won the 5A title.
