San Diego 69, Gonzaga 62

Tough assignment for the Zags tonight, facing an amped up San Diego team that needed a win to make the NCAA tourney, and in San Diego's home arena.

Still, I think Gonzaga would've won had Abdullahi Kuso not gotten in early foul trouble, which really hurt Gonzaga on the boards--USD had 14 offensive rebounds, the plurality going to long-armed ballhawk Gyno Pomare. Pomare was picking up so many boards that the ESPN color guy started calling him "Garbage man" and then "Fred Sanford."

Kuso is the only reliable rebounder the Zags have--both Pendergraft and Heytvelt prefer life on the perimeter. They need his muscle against teams that play a slowdown game like San Diego.

None of the Zags' shooters ever got going--they finished the game 0-10 from three, with gunners Matt Bouldin, Austin Daye and Micah Downs finishing with only five field goals between them.

With an RPI of 30, according to Ken Pomeroy, the Zags are in the tourney for sure.

But ex-Gonzaga assistant Bill Grier and his Toreros got to hoist the hardware.

So, does the WCC get 3 (THREE!?!?!) teams in or does St. Mary's stay at home with a 38 RPI and a 24 win season.

To put a fine point on it, it's possible that the ACC and the SEC may end up with 3 teams in the field...
