Sonics, Pack Your Bags

After our state's governor told Steve Ballmer to put his $150 million where the sun don't shine, city politicians and Save Our Sonics are scrambling to keep our last, best hope of saving the Sonics alive. Meanwhile, more than a few fans are ready to wave them goodbye.

Tim Ceis tells the Times' Steve Kelley: "We're going to see if we can go it alone. Somehow, some way, figure out a way to do this. I'm not willing to say no to this investor group yet. We're going to turn over every rock we can to try to find a solution."

Brian Robinson of Save our Sonics is pissed: "It does not look like this is going to get done this session and that is just a tremendous disservice. They flat out ignored the will of the people...It is a freaking travesty and I hope members of legislature who were duped by their leadership are ashamed of themselves."

Unfortunately, this final push to keep the Sonics seems to have pushed the Sonics further out of town. After the legislature's inaction, some are finally ready to give up.

John McGrath of TNT advocates dropping the court case so there's still a smidgen of goodwill between the NBA and the city, hopefully paving the way for a new time. In the meantime, writes McGrath: "Work out an arrangement with the NBA – similar to what Cleveland did when the Browns relocated to Baltimore – that would allow the Sonics logo, color scheme and records to stay in Seattle." This is what Cleveland did when the Browns left. It's pretty lame, and to your diehards, the people who actually care about these things, an empty gesture.

Speaking of the diehards, what do they think? Over at SupersonicSoul, Peter Nussbaum writes: "Personally, the whole situation has got me to the point where I just don't give a damn any more."

Ceis told Steve Kelley: "I'm hoping the general enthusiasm that came out of this new investor group stepping up won't be lost in the next few weeks."

Tim, looks like it's already gone. Looks like Sonics fans have finally reached the final stage of grieving--acceptance.

I've already given up on the NBA. They won't get a dime of my money in the future.

And empty gesture or not, Oklahoma doesn't desrve any bit of our history. I'm all for that sort of thing staying here.
