Northwest Sports: In the Morning

M's blow another great Felix start...
"You can't compete in this division doing this," John McLaren told reporters after the game, writes John Hickey.

The loss is McLaren's fault. He should've recognized Felix was tiring, writes John McGrath.

Lookout Landing isn't dealing well with the loss.

The M's can't hit, writes Steve Kelley. His solution: Call up Jeff Clement and Wladimir Balentien, and trade for Junior.

Greg Norton has temporarily replaced Jose Vidro as DH. As long as Norton is hitting, Vidro will ride the pine, writes Hickey in this notebook (item 3). Norton was technically invited by the M's to spring training, but he really invited himself, writes Doug Pacey. After not getting an invite from any team, Norton dialed up John McLaren and requested one.

Eddie Rodriguez will be the M's third-base coach for at least a month, maybe longer. Sam Perlozzo tore a ligament in his knee and needs surgery. Jim Riggleman takes over for Rodriguez at first base. Perlozzo takes Riggleman's job as bench coach.

Hawks draft bunch of unknowns...
If you'd heard of any of the guys the Seahawks drafted, you are a better human being than I. (Ok, I guess I'd heard of Carlson and Forsett.)

Meanwhile, the Hawks held SeaGals tryouts. The P-I has pictures.

ESPN's Mel Kiper gives the Hawks a B.

Only one Washington college player was drafted, the first time that's happened since 1940, writes Gregg Bell. Wazzu's Alex Brink went in the seventh round to Houston. As I wrote last April for the P-I, the fact that the Huskies were competing without NFL talent ought to give you pause when criticizing Willingham.

33 Pac-10 players were taken--here's the full list.

Three Huskies (so far) have signed free-agent contracts, writes Bob Condotta. They are: Louis Rankin (Oakland), Marcel Reese (Miami) and Anthony Russo (Hawks). My roommate was so glad to see Russo and his awful hands leave the Dawgs, he's going to be so upset when he hears this.

Ryan Moore gets biggest Tour paycheck...
The pride of Puyallup lost the EDS Byron Nelson golf championship on the third hole of a sudden-death playoff when Adam Scott hit a 50-foot birdie putt. But the $691,200 second-place check he'll get should salve his pain.

I was at the M's game on Sunday. No doubt about it. McCleran should have gone to the bullpen. Everyone in the stadium could see that Felix was straining to keep his pitches from riding high. Give him a break, JM!
