Bill Grier, the former Gonzaga assistant who, in his first year as San Diego's coach, guided the Toreros to a tourney win, announced yesterday that he'd turned down the Oregon State job.
“I have decided to stay at USD because I strongly feel in my heart that this is what is best for me and my family right now," he said.
Here's how I imagine that conversation going...
[Grier, in flip flops, opens patio door. He walks outside, shielding his eyes from the California sunshine, and approaches his wife, who's tanning beside the pool.]
Grier: Hey honey...I got offered the head coaching job at Oregon State.
[Grier's wife removes earbugs that were hidden]
Grier's wife: Oh, sorry, I was just listening to REO Speedwagon--remember, we're going to see them at that outdoor concert this month. [Takes sip out of nearby glass]. My, iced tea certainly is refreshing on a warm day like this. But, sorry, you wanted to say something?
Grier: No, no, nothing.
