Piece in the P-I

I've got a piece in the P-I this morning, about John McLaren's persistent refusal to sub out any of his struggling hitters.

I actually wrote this piece before Tuesday's game, but the P-I couldn't run it until today--so there was this small part of me hoping that Wilkerson, Johjima and Vidro wouldn't bust out. As it turns out they didn't, and McLaren even pre-empted my advice by benching Johjima yesterday--so I slapped on an ending to recognize that (hopefully without sounding smug about it).

Had the three of them all started hitting, it would've rendered the column nonsensical. On the other hand, Dave at USS Mariner thinks it's nonsensical anyway, so maybe I was screwed either way.

I was just thinking about this exact issue this morning while coming into work. Why isn't Morse playing? A bag of rocks batting for Wilkerson would not decrease the on-base percentage that much. So how could Morse be any worse?

The fact that Morse has played only one game so far it a travesty. How will they find out if his spring training numbers were a fluke or not if he only gets a start once every 12 games.

McClaren said it would be a lefty-righty platoon. But, since Wilkerson can't seem to hit off a tee, how about getting Morse two starts a week? He can fill in for Wilkerson, Sexson, or Vidro without losing anything.

Dave really didn't seem to like your article. I saw nothing wrong with it. Is he breaking the blogger code? I thought you all were supposed to support each other when someone gets a mainstream gig.

maybe your article did it.
Mike Morse is starting today in place of Wilkerson... against a right-handed pitcher.

Woo-hoo! Let's see if he can get a hit...

I don't fault Dave, actually--he implied some things from the piece that I hadn't intended anyone to imply, which is my fault for not being more clear.

So I won't report him to the National Association of Blogger, which would force him to watch Joe Morgan explain why playing for one run is more likely to lead to a big inning.
