Joey Cora To Manage Mets?

I'm not able to find the Newsday report cited here, but it evidently said that Joey Cora is high on the Mets' list of possible replacements for Willie Randolph.

Cora is currently the bench coach of the White Sox, though. I've never heard of a guy switching organizations mid-season.

One of the most publicized problems with the Mets is tension between some of the Latino players and some of the white players. Billy Wagner called out Carlos Delgado for not talking to reporters after a game; Wagner later apologized to Delgado.

Perhaps Cora, who's Latino, but has played, managed or coached in the US for more than twenty years, could do a better job of navigating this minefield than Randolph has.

Certainly you'd see a few more drag bunts out of the Mets.

If hired, Cora would be the second ex-Mariner to manage the Mets; Bobby Valentine, who ended his career with the '79 M's, managed at Shea from 1996-2002.

Cora would be the first (and likely only) Mets manager to share a name with an ex-cat of mine; in the winter after the Mariner madness of '95, I convinced my sister to name a small mewling kitten "Joey Cora." I think that cat ended up going to the pound after scratching my sister in the face. "Suzie," "Chizz," "Mr. Pelham," and "Azrael" may have been better cats, but they are unlikely to ever become Mets managers.
