Northwest Sports: In the Morning

Watched the San Antonio/New Orleans game last night at the Roanoke, where they were having some insane drink special--I got a pint of Red Hook Blonde for $2.50. Huh? Some friends commandeered the back room, where we rooted heartily against the evil empire. As the Spurs extended their lead in the third quarter, one guy sunk lower and lower in his seat. "I'm hoping if I hit the floor, the Hornets will come back." As it turned out, they did come back, and if Pargo hits that wide-open three, they'd have tied it. Wasn't to be--and of course they got shafted by the refs, but that's what happens when you play the defending champs.

Jon Lester, of Bellarmine Prep, threw a no-hitter for the Red Sox. As far as I can tell, he's the first player born in Washington to throw one. Here's the list of no-hitters, here's the list of pitchers born in Washington--check yourself, if you want.

The M's best prospect, Carlos Triunfel, has been removed from Class-A High Desert and sent back to Peoria for a violation of team rules, reports the P-I's John Hickey. The Mariners won't say what he did or how long the suspension will last. I wonder if the M's have him confined to his hotel room, or what? I assume they have residences for players, is he on some sort of team house arrest? He's only 18. But--he's 18, he could theoretically do what he wants. (Then again, if he was released from his contract, wouldn't he have to return to the Dominican Republic?).

It's hard to believe just how bad the M's DHs have been. The Times' Danny O'Neil presents the unhappy numbers.

Gary Washburn of the P-I breaks down the Sonics' lottery chances. The lottery is at 5pm tonight on ESPN.

Schultz v. Bennett gets underway. Pre-trial work for Howard Schultz' case against Clay Bennett will begin at the same time as Bennett's case against the city, writes Greg Johns.

The Sounders will play Juventus' youth team in a friendly next month.

how did the hornets get shafted by the refs?

Maybe "shafted" is too strong a word--I just thought there were a couple of calls toward the end of the game that ought to have gone the Hornets way. But, like I said, you've got to expect that if you are playing the defending champs--and that's probably the way it should be--the defending champs should get the benefit of the doubt from the refs.
