Two emails of note in the Sonics case: One damaging, one just embarrassing. First, via the Times' Jim Brunner, the damaging. Aubrey McClendon to Clay Bennett, by way of apologizing for telling a reporter they always intended to move the team: "the truth is we did buy it with the hope of moving to Oklahoma City." Yikes. Now, via the P-I's Greg Johns, the embarrassing: When Bennett was told that some Sonics players weren't keen on a move to OKC, he wrote: "Boo hoo." Nice! ...
A winless Memorial Day weekend for the M's, though Ichiro had a nice catch. ...
Despite the M's 18-34 record, nobody's getting fired. On Saturday, Bavasi said McLaren won't be fired, telling reporters: "This is not a field manager issue. Our performance is not related to his work. It’s related to (players’) underperformance and underachievement." Then, on Sunday, Chuck Armstrong said Bavasi's safe. "We had no discussions about making any changes with our general manager or our field manager." I wouldn't read too much into any of this. Obviously, at the end of the year, one and probably both of these guys are gone. At this point, does it really matter when? ...
Ichiro's brilliant quote after Friday's game: "Playing on this team and seeing what is happening around me, I feel that something is beginning to fall apart. But, if I was not in this situation, and I was objectively watching what just happened this week, I would probably be drinking a lot of beers and booing.” As an homage, USS Mariner presents the beers of Papua New Guinea, and launches a search to find and drink them.
The Denver Broncos were apparently considering signing Shaun Alexander. They aren't anymore. ...
That Rip the Cut basketball tournament sounded like a blast--Shawn Kemp, Brandon Roy, Nate Robinson, Jamal Crawford and Spencer Hawes, among many others, all played. Here are reports from Gary Washburn and Bob Condotta. ...
Rick Neuheisel's UCLA contract has some interesting provisions that cost Neuheisel money if he, well, if he is Rick Neuheisel, reports the LA Times: "Neuheisel will not be eligible for performance bonuses if the program is put on NCAA probation and must return previous bonuses if the team is 'subsequently sanctioned for NCAA violations in which coach was directly involved, that coach facilitated, condoned, or ignored about [which] coach knew or reasonably should have known.'" Why bother, UCLA? I'm sure Neuheisel will make mincemeat out of that in the inevitable lawsuit. You may as just pay him the money now. HT: EDSBS]

I hope some reporter asks Sonics and even other NBA players about their thoughts on Bennett saying "Boo Hoo." Players are immature babies that need to be constants sucked up to, even by the owners (see LeBron James and Cleveland). I believe Gary Payton would use the term "respect," as in the organization is showing a lack of respect.
Let's be realistic here, is Kevin Durant going to sign a "max" contract to play in Oklahoma City or will he take a "max" contract to play elsewhere? What about Jeff Green or the #4 pick this year. You will have to offer these guys "max" deals for them to consider playing in Oklahoma but how are you going to be able to pay someone else?
Look at Memphis. They sure are having a easy time getting top free agents. And Memphis is loads nicer than Oklahoma City. I read somewhere (probably ESPN, Stern's mouthpiece) that Durant might be interested in staying in Oklahoma because he went to school in Texas. First off, it was Austin; and Oklahoma City is no Austin. Second, isn't there a massive rivaly between the states? From football to oil?
