Northwest Sports: In the Morning

The surprising Husky men's golf team moved up to 6th place in the NCAA Championships after yesterday's second round [results, pdf], after Nick Taylor shot -6. The Dawgs are having it a little tougher today, they are +13 through eight holes. Here's the full live leaderboard. Oregon is tied for 24th. ...

The Mariners are neither dogging it, nor do they lack leadership, according to Norm Charlton. The Sheriff tells Steve Kelley: "If I didn't think we were working hard, I would be so mad, I'd be breaking stuff every day," Charlton said. "If guys came in here like they didn't care, I wouldn't be talking like this. But they haven't quit working and they do care...I don't think it [leadership] is a problem here. We do have a lot of guys in here who pull guys aside and talk with them. We do. And we have a lot of guys who work very hard." ...

Here's something I didn't know--pitchers usually throw much harder when the weather warms up. David Andriesen discusses the phenomenon with M's relievers. ...

The M's will wear jersey that say "Marineros" on Sunday. Here's Betancourt wearing one. ...

Larry Stone says the M's season is over, and they need to start thinking about 2009. He also reassures those (read, USS Mariner) who are worried that Jose Vidro's option will vest. According to Stone, Vidro will need 600 PAs this year, he won't get them.

Geoff Baker looks at what went wrong. ...

Say what you want about John McLaren (and I have), you've got to admire the guy's willingness to take blame: "The criticism, I take it, it's not like I have any choice. I was the one in spring training saying we'd be battling the Angels to the wire. If I were a fan, I'd boo myself. I'm responsible." Kind of the polar opposite of Bill "Blame the Troops" Bavasi, don't you think? ...

Potential Sonics draft picks talk about the city. Most say they'd rather play in Seattle than Oklahoma City, but not Eric Gordon: "That would be a better spot (Oklahoma City) than being all the way up there in Seattle." I'll bet Indiana fans are wishing Gordon had gone very far away. Like Siberia, maybe. ...

Husky center Juan Garcia's foot injury is healing without surgery, and now there's an outside chance he could play in '08. ...

Mississippi State contacted Oregon State baseball coach Pat Casey about the Bulldogs' opening. Casey said he's not going to take it.

Norm's comments just underscore all of our points in our conversation the other day, Seth. I mean, if I work out every day for the next 12 months, lifting weights, going to the cages, taking grounders, etc., can I make myself into a major league ballplayer? No? But I worked hard!

The guys work hard, they try hard, but all the hard workingness and try harderness in the world can't overcome their biggest problem.

They aren't good enough.

I totally agree.

Mind you, it strikes me that Norm Charlton wouldn't be doing his job prospects any favor if he said something like "We just can't figure out a way to motivate these guys--they won't listen to us."
