Mariners Take Josh Fields, a Reliever from Georgia

Says one guy on ESPN: "I'm surprised to see the Mariners take a reliever based on the state of the major league franchise."

Says another guy on ESPN: "Bob Fontaine and Billy Bavasi have been running drafts for a long time, they know what they're doing."

Um, I think I'm inclined to agree with the first guy.

Fields is represented by Scott Boras. Last year he was drafted in the second round by the Braves, they couldn't agree on terms, so Fields went back in the draft. The Mariners will likely have to spend a bunch to sign Fields, which they've been loathe to do.

So, a guy who'd be more appropriate for a contending team, who the Mariners may or may not be able to sign. Sounds wonderful.

Sorry, I'm in a rather down mood about the Mariners right now. Let's look on the bright side--Fields can really pitch.

He has a 94mph fastball, and a plus "hammer" curve in the high 80s. That's some nasty stuff. He's lean and wiry, MLB describes him as a "more physical Tim Lincecum."

Nerd stats: Fields had 56 Ks and 18 BBs in 31.2 IP this year for Georgia. Opponents hit .112 against him with two homers in 107 ABs.

Trad stats: He was 2-2 with a 2.27 ERA and had 16 saves.

True personal fact: He majored in "sports studies." Ah, the SEC.

Didn't realize Jim Halpert was a relief pitcher from Georgia.
