Worse Than Expansion

All this talk about the Mariners starting over? Forget it. They're already starting over. The Mariners, right now, are worse than most expansion teams.

Check it: the Mariners have fewer wins after 60 games than 10 of the 14 expansion teams in major league history.

Your average expansion general manager has been able to assemble a more competitive roster from the mediocre castoffs of other teams than Bill Bavasi has with his own farm system and $115 million.

There are so many ways to demonstrate how Bavasi has botched his stewardship of the team, but, to me, this is the most disturbing.

In terms of Mariner history, the '08 M's have the second-worst record in team history after 60 games.

Think about it--for a franchise that was historically terrible, only once (1978) have they been this bad after 60 games.

Good lord. Here's how bad it is--I was just told that they played McLaren's tirade on the Howard Stern Show. When you're mocked along with the likes of Underdog Lady and Elephant Boy...well, it can't get much worse than that.

Luckily, the rebuilding begins right now. The 2008 MLB draft just started, the Mariners should make their pick about 1pm.

That is amazingly depressing.
